Marian Column, 4783 Wernstein/Inn

fotos

This Marian Column was a votive monument erected by Emperor Ferdinand III. He had vowed to honor the Madonna in this way if all ended well for Austria in the Franco-Swedish intervention in 1645. Originally this stone column was erected in the first district of Vienna on the square “Am Hof”. In 1667 the column was replaced and the Emperor gave the old column to Graf Georg Ludwig von Sinzendorf, the president of the “Hofkammer”, who had it erected next to his castle “Neuburg am Inn” in Wernstein. In 1670 the reinauguration took place. Over the years the column was subjected to repeated repairs and modifications. Finally, in 1990 it was thoroughly restored by our company. Due to its current location on the shore of the Inn River it is exposed to considerable humidity. Our main task was to counteract the deleterious effects of moisture, salt damage, and weathering and to take preventative measures to protect the stone structure from further deterioration. As a final surface treatment the monument was whitewashed to provide a protective buffer since the monument is only subjected to periodic maintenance and renovation. Follow-up maintenance was carried out in 1999, 2002, and 2006.
